Lateral spreading effects on VLBI radio images of neutron star merger jets

چکیده

ABSTRACT Very long baseline interferometry radio images recently proved to be essential in breaking the degeneracy ejecta model for neutron star merger GW170817. We discuss properties of synthetic jet afterglows by using semi-analytical models laterally spreading or non-spreading jets. The image centroid initially moves away from explosion point sky with apparent superluminal velocity. After reaching a maximum displacement, its motion is reversed. This behaviour line that found full hydrodynamic simulations. show evolution shift and size are significantly different when lateral considered. A radio counterpart to a neutron star merger.

Gravitational waves have been detected from a binary neutron star merger event, GW170817. The detection of electromagnetic radiation from the same source has shown that the merger occurred in the outskirts of the galaxy NGC 4993, at a distance of 40 megaparsecs from Earth. We report the detection of a counterpart radio source that appears 16 days after the event, allowing us to diagnose the ene...

Neutron Star Merger Seen and Heard For

O ver thousands of years, astronomy has evolved from hand-drawn maps of the night sky to breathtaking telescope images of the far-away cosmos. Yet despite this advance in technology, most of our information about the Universe has come from photon messengers. This changed in September 2015 with the detection of gravitational waves from a black hole merger at the Laser Interferometer Gravitationa...

On the Progenitor of Binary Neutron Star Merger GW170817

On 2017 August 17 the merger of two compact objects with masses consistent with two neutron stars was discovered through gravitational-wave (GW170817), gamma-ray (GRB170817A), and optical (SSS17a/AT 2017gfo) observations. The optical source was associated with the early-type galaxy NGC 4993 at a distance of just ∼40 Mpc, consistent with the gravitational-wave measurement, and the merger was lo...

First VLBI images of a main-sequence star

The binary system UV Cet A and B has been observed with the VLBA/VLA at 3.6 cm wavelength. Both dMe stars have been detected. The stronger, steady radio emitter of the two, UV Cet B, is resolved into at least two spatial components. Their relative intensities change during the 6.3 hours of observing time. One of the components is more stable and resolved, the other is possibly unresolved. The r...
